Time to move to Rel1.00....

Post by Rudi De Vos »

http://doc.uvnc.com/UltraVNC-1.0.20.7-Setup.exe
http://doc.uvnc.com/UltraVNC-1.0.20.7.zip

We still need to solve some driver issue (upgrade), new dll is not installed
(installer)

We need some feedback so we can upgrade the number to Rel1.0..
It would be a shame that after more then 2 years we would rel a version with stupid bugs

Please test....(before 21 juni)

I hope 21 juni give enough time for some possitieve (i hope) feedback.
It will never be 100% for all users, but it have to be stable.

I have some feedback.

Can we please clean up the poor English grammar?

1. The Video Hook "Driver Test" window.
  • Recommendation:

    - The driver is present / The driver is NOT present
    - The driver is currently ACTIVE / The driver is NOT active
    - The communication service is present / NOT present

Also, the checkboxes are misaligned on this dialog. What about adding some tooltips to the checkboxes to explain what each does?
2. Admin properties window:
  • - "Log debug infos to the WinVNC.log file". Change "infos" to "information".
    - "Disable clients options in tray icon menu". Change "clients" to "client"
    - The sentence case is inconsistent on this property window. Some items are in sentence case, some Title Case, SomeDon'tEvenHaveSpacesInTheSentence.
3. List of clients (tray icon menu) window is displaying "Ultr@VNC" as the title. It seems that all other reference use "a" instead of "@" now.

4. How about getting rid of the silly splash screen with the computer superimposed over the "lightening" mountains. It looks amateur.

5. Change app window context menu item "Enable Remote Input/Monitor" / "Disable Remote Input/Monitor" to a checked menu item like the "Show Toolbar" menu item.
  • You could call it "Disable Remote Input/Monitor". Checked would indicate that input wasn't allowed. Unchecked would indicate that it was allowed.

On the same topic, why does the toolbar button for this function show a single line through the mouse to indicate "remot input enabled"? I'm not sure when I've ever seen a line through something and thought that it was allowed or enabled.

I'd suggest either showing a green "check" for enabled (or just the mouse icon with nothing over it) and a red "X" for disabled.
6. Change the password entry to allow the Windows XP "visual style" (the dots). The bars look unpolished.

Well, that's a start on the aesthetic issues (other than the whole icon debate, [post=6603]which I won't get into[/post] :) ).

I know these items aren't "functional" issues, but I think the image of the product as a professional tool suffers because of these types of small details. I don't know if we care about non-functional issues, but you said you wanted feedback so, there it is. :D

On a positive note, this release is fantastic. I noticed that the login comes back after a failed attempt. Nice addition! This is going to be a great release...

Oh, I forgot about a couple functional problems that I had:

1. When I had the video hook driver installed, My DVD player apps couldn't play DVDs. PowerDVD had problems displaying some "graph data". WinDVD could "create overlays". And Windows Media just didn't show the video.

Also, the video driver affects the ability to resize VirtualPC windows dynamically. Small issue, but I thought I'd mention it.

2. If plugins are stored in the "plugin" subfolder, should the the app not look here for them instead of the executable's directory?

Thanks.

win98se upgrade a previous RC206 when Ultravnc is resident but inactiv
withtout any change of option default optio selected
I had ultraVNC setup 20.7 installing ...extracting files. (freeze) no error message, nothing just (cancel no effect), only end task work
2. If plugins are stored in the "plugin" subfolder, should the the app not look here for them instead of the executable's directory?
I agree, I think is very bad idea to put in folder plugin until UltraVNC is capable to read in folder plugin ! (lost time for nothing)

1. When I had the video hook driver installed ???
An installed driver should not have any influence on the real display driver, it is only during the connection that the driver is activated.
Driver activate/desactivate dynamic.

While you are connected, the driver is activated and hardware acceleration is disabled. This behavious can not be changed, this is the same as using the sms mirror driver or netmeeting.

2. Plugins are a server/viewer pair. I personal prefer to let the user manual copy the plugin he want in the executable's directory.
Overwriting a plugin could break the pair and also confuse a lot of users.
(remote upgrade using plugin....)

I found this cosmectic bug only 1 one way without lang.dll on any test

"bars" from english --> english/any language
"dots" is shown as expected from french XP/any language --> english !

Yes, I understand that but it doesn't change the fact that with the driver installed, no client connected, I have these problems. With the driver uninstalled, they disappear.

Don't we already have the capability of "choosing which plugin" via the drop-down box?? If the DSM drop-down were populated based on what was available in the plugin directory, the user can then choose WITHOUT have to manually copy things around. This is more efficient, in my opinion.

Would this help?

I know UltraVNC isn't written in C#, but maybe it will give you an idea as there are some WinAPI and MFC calls mentioned.

WITHOUT have to manually copy things around
Not complete true, they still need to copy it to the viewer.
Plugin is a PAIR...

Suppose a plugin still exist in the exe, from before the update.
What plugin are you using ? same names, different places....
The whole thing would become to complicate to give any support.

Now, the user is forced to copy the plugin, so he know what version he is using and what dll need to be copied to the viewer. Or he just keep his old plugin, as it was already working and configured.

Driver:
I'm running the driver (sleeping) and don't have any of the problems.
Are you sure the driver is realy closed after connection.

If the registry is blocked (admin only) and attached.todeskop=1, the driver is never disabled for a normal user.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\Current\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\vncdrv\DEVICE0]
"Attach.ToDesktop"=dword:00000000 --> disabled on next resolution change
"Attach.ToDesktop"=dword:00000001 --> enabled on next resolution change

You could try Wingdings font and lowercase L for the password char, works for me and most (if not all) windows versions have this font!

Hope it helps.

All right, I spoke too soon. I did some more testing and, in fact, everything works fine when I connect through loopback and disable the driver. If I re-enable it, I experience the behaviour previously mentioned.

The driver must have been "stuck" when I was last testing. Perhaps a rogue process was still in memory after a previous winvnc.exe crash or something.

Anyway, it's good to know that this isn't a bug :)

Thanks.

Ok, I understand what you're saying. That makes sense from a support point of view.

What about having UltraVNC manage this copy from plugin to root folder? Have the drop-down pick the available from the "plugin" folder and when the choice is made, have the app automatically copy the plugin where it needs it.

I just don't like manually moving files around or making manual registry entries if I don't have to. These are just thoughts to make usage less of a manual process. Take them at face value as I don't have intimate knowledge of the code ;)

Thanks

You are correct, but this should be done with some little vnc manager application.

Something that let you select a connection name and use plugin and key for that specific connection. Something basic...with a little graphical interface.

Every simple part we embed in vnc need to maintained by us, as it become part of the big vnc code.
As seperate application it is easyer to maintain, and can be done by some other developpers, possible better then when we have to do it in the embedded vnc code.

1. is there a changelog available ? (from the last installer version to this version)
Would be helpful in order to know what changes/fixes to have a look at particularly.

2. I think it would be very important to release a test version with the installer incl. the new driver before going public.
You know, everything that's not tested has to be considered not working ;)

1. Use the closed items in the verified bug section.
They best explain what is fixed.

2. We need indeed to release a Rel100 installer for testing, but i want to prevent people for using it before 21 June else we need to update version numbers again.
Perhaps i will make the test installer available via pm

We also need to make 2 installers
1) without driver --> for sourceforge download
2) with driver -> via uvnc.com

Thanks for the info....

I forgot that the server check the driver dll version.....needed to prevent the BSOD when the driver was from RC15.

Dll version is updated.
Now the server think the new driver is not allowed and block activation.

Fix it tomorrow.

Driver issue should be solved, new installer online

http://uvnc.com/v100

The complete directory structure and files + iss script are also copied in this directory. It is the actual copy of the files used to create the installer.

The french version will not make 21june. Need to wait untill Sam return from holliday. His native language is french.

was not better in my situation,
video hook driver still not active after an upgrade old v1 to new v1 on w2k3

workaround
video hook driver finally work after uninstalling driver... reboot... install reboot... OK

viewer remote upgrade lost connection before setup was finish (due stop and start winvnc service)
but viewer can finish remote setup again after waiting few seconds without any change.
