Need UltraVNC SC to work with 98
I am trying to get UltraVNC SC to work on 98 first edition and above. I can not seem to get it to work I have tried every viewer from version 18 up. On version 18 is seemed like it was going to connect but it wouldn't. It would crash the viewer everytime. I need this either rebuilt or a solution fast. Can someone please help me? I am even willing to pay someone to rebuild the SC for me to work on 98 and up. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Forgot, Version 20.3
When I run Viewer 20.3, the viewer detects the incoming connection and asks if I want to accept it but, it never connects when i click yes.

Having Problems Still
I have tried both version of SC. I am listening for a connectiong with the Viewer by adding -listen to the shortcut on the desktop. So the target looks like this:
"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -listen
The default port that is uses is 5500 so I just leave it for that. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Yes all of that is correct because I can connect to other XP machines. I have configured my firewall for the incoming connection. However when I try to connect from a Windows 98 machine running SC to an XP machine running the viewer it only brings up a message box that asks me to accept the connection.
Now when I reverse the order, meaning I run the viewer on the 98 machine and the server on the XP machine it works every time.

it is definitely working in both directions for me:
winxp sc request -> win98se listener
win98se sc request -> winxp listener
i am also using the msrc4 plugin with matching rc4.key files at each end (one rc4.key is built into the sc).
my listener shortcut:
target: "C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5500 -dsmplugin msrc4plugin_noreg.dsm
start in: "C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\"
my helpdesk.txt:
[HOST]
sod/sgt-d [ home ] city, state
-plugin -connect me2.ath.cx:5500 -noregistry

Now I am getting a message saying "The Plugin cannot be loaded. Please check its name integrity." I know it has to do with the plugin but I am not sure why it is doing this. I am just using the MSRC4Plugin.dsm and the rc4.key that comes with the SC. The once I click ok and go to my 98 machine and close the SC then a message pops up on my Xp machine that says "Connection failed - Error reading Protocol Version" and then it lists the possible causes. Thanks Sgt-d for all of your help.

My Configuration
Viewer Config: (Target)
"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5500 -dsmplugin MSRC4Plugin.dsm
SC config:
[HOST]
-plugin -connect 192.168.1.1:5500 -noregistry
...
[DIRECT]
"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5500 -dsmplugin MSRC4Plugin.dsm

ok, you are almost all done (believe it or not)...
your vnc listener shortcut MUST use the NOREG dsmplugin. with SC you cannot use the normal dsmplugin in your vncviewer/listener command line.
so, change your target to this:
"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5500 -dsmplugin msrc4plugin_noreg.dsm

1) First try without plugin
2) With plugin: check if viewer and server site has the same version. (1.1.6)
RC19.5 > Plugin 1.1.6
RC19.5< Plugin 1.1.0
If you used the installer, the new plugins are in the plugin subdir. Check if the viewer is realy using this dll or still is using
the older version. You usual need to copy the plugin from the subdir in the same directory as the vncviewer.

SC (custom zip/exe) ships with a file named MSRC4Plugin.dsm. do not attempt to use any other file - you have to use this one only inside your SC package. do not attempt to rename it either.
all i mentioned was to change your vnc viewer shortcut to something like this:
"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5500 -dsmplugin msrc4plugin_noreg.dsm
instead of:
"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5500 -dsmplugin msrc4plugin.dsm
because... to accept SC connections your vncviewer must be started in listen mode using the NOREG plugin.
if you still have problems, try turning off the msrc4 plugin inside sc and in your viewer as suggested previously by rudi to make sure your connection is working first. then later add msrc4 back in.

Ok here is my current configuration: (lol this is crazy)
On the viewer side:
This is the strange thing. Not sure if this has anything to do with it. When I use the following target I get an error message when I try to config my plugin by clicking the button beside it on the viewer.
VNC Viewer Target: "C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5500 -dsmplugin msrc4plugin_noreg.dsm
The error message is "The Plugin cannot be loaded. Please check its integrity." Now if I load the viewer not in listening mode, I can configure the DSM, but obviously can't accept connections. Does yours do the same thing?
This is the same error message I get when I try to connect to the XP machine with SC from my Win98 machine.
Now on the SC side:
[HOST]
-plugin -connect 192.168.1.1:5500 -noregistry
...
[DIRECT]
I using the same rc4.key and dsm plugin for both the server and the viewer. I am definitely not sure what to do now. Thanks.

Ok, I didn't see your last post before I posted my last post. lol
Here is what I have now. I have the complete download from the Ultravnc site for the SC. I copied it to my Win98 machine and changed the Host to point to my XP machine and use the dsm plugin included in the package.
Now I copied the noreg dsm into the viewer directory and set up my target in the shortcut like you said. I am still having the same problem.

I tried the connection without using the dsm on both machines and it does get to the msg box that asks if you would like to accept the incoming connection, but if you click yes, it does not do anything. Here is the log from the vnc viewer:
Started and Winsock (v 2) initialised
bufsize expanded to 4352
Registered connection with app
Deregistered connection from app
Exiting
VNC viewer closing down
A few minutes after the connection is made and nothing come up on the viewer side, the viewer shuts down.

ok i am going to be out for a few hours but when i get home i will go over the entire post again. we will get it.
i can't remember, but if you aren't using 20.5, install it on both computers and then try again.
also, when building the sc on the sc page, use the top one, 20+.
try some stuff, i'll be back.

I was just tried this issue on LAN after replacing vncviewer with new build, i can't acces to viewer until to do below
I think is an antivirus like NAV2005 lock access until you update your worm list autorized access,
add to your list (trusted) worm list :

i'm not sure of anything at this point.
i'm pretty sure i asked about firewalls already.
yeah, i did...
i think its being blocked, just not sure.

yeah, i did...
additionally, are there any firewalls running that might block the connection?
no specific information though... like... are ports being forwarded? if so, where? etc.I have configured my firewall for the incoming connection.

Same problem here
I've exactly the same problem with one of my clients!
I've tried with and without plugin, and now I'll will try to install the full server (no SC) to the client machine and I'll tell you the results. Do you want me to take any special steps? Record some logs, etc..?
