Speed issues and strange behavior over the Internet

Post by eo »

SC is great - but been having some issues with some computers. Some computer are not very responsive or if an application dies, we dont see the error screen, but the user does. Once the application is killed, SC comes back to life. Does anyone have suggestion or pointers what might be happening? Some of the commerical remote support works very fast in this same situation (which we use as a fall back currently).

It seems like some applications cause some blocking? Is this sound reasonable?

What applications are you not seeing errors on? I have been able to see the errors on all the programs I have used over SC.

It seems to be when any application that used the web. Especially Outlook 2003 RPC over HTTP. It doesnt happen always, only when something is interferring.

I work with a lot of Outlook stuff but I am unfamiliar with Outlook 2003 RPC. What is that? Can you tell me more? Is that the corporate email site you can check email from?

Outlook 2003 now can tunnel connections over HTTP, its called RPC over HTTP.

Some things we are run into is where there is an application that is tunneling HTTP traffic. For example, Internet accellerators, spyware, proxies, etc. Anything that redirects HTTP traffic.

The problem we have seems to only happen when some application is using HTTP and is having problems connecting (like the above situation) or changing the settings for Outlook thru the mail icon in the control panel. This causes SC to hose up or in some cases not even be able to view Outlook.

We've had several cases, where Outlook is actually loaded on the end-users computer, but we cant see it. Once they log in, then SC paints the screen. Not sure what to think about that.

The problem might not be with SC but with UltraVNC. Since the end-users are customers, we dont have that test system to play with to determine the exact issue.

Once we have something, we'll share it here.

Ok, am now able to replicate this issue:

Outlook has to be in RPC over HTTP mode.

Starting Outlook, when user is prompted for Login credentials. The logon box and Outlook application is unavailable for SC. Its like the app is blocking the screen. Once the user logs in, then everything re-appears.

I tried changing the settings on the end-users computer, PROPERTIES changing the events, etc. But each time I go back to the settings they are defaulted back.

Any ideas?

If I turn off "System HookDll" it works fine. Another area, if I get an application error, then Systen HookDll must be off as well in order to see the dialog to acknowledge.

Is there a way to set this automatically on install thru SC?

Does unchecking System HookDLL, make sense? Should I be using something else?

Thanks!

If no hookdll is in the exe SFX, hookdll is not used.
Use 7zip to see the files what are in the downloaded exe
expand, remove the dll and SFX back.

I am curious why would you use Outlook RPC over HTTP?
