You can choose the listening port to use VNC native protocol on 80.
If some firewall blocks non HTTP protocol then you should use the HTTP with Java Viewer.

When I reduce the network speed to 10MB some (which ?) hardware or functionality on the laptop is less used and release the process.

Try to forward the VNC traffic from server to laptop through the other client. Use repeater or rinetd from www.boutell.com. See if it changes anything. Hello, I use UltraVNC client with 2 computers, a desktop (P4 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM) and a laptop (P3 1.1 GHz, 512 MB RAM). The 2 clients and the server (1.2 GHz, 1GB RAM) are on the same switch, no more computer on this switch. The server aprt uses the video hook driver. With the desktop all works fine ...
