Mystery solved! The XP home computer had a wrong ipnumber in the windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file. There didn't need to be ANY ipnumbers in the hosts file anyway! I have taken them all out and everything is now functioning normally.

NEW PROBLEM:

The 1.1.9.1 vncviewer.exe will run on my XP machines but on one XP machine it fails to connect to the Windows 8 machine if I use the name of the computer. If I use the ipnumber, it works. What would cause this? The one that works ...
