I tried your proposed workaround by unticking "Remove Aero (Vista)" on my Windows XP SP3 computer, but upon disconnecting, it still stretches the wallpaper!

I can also confirm that if you enter Control Panel > Display Properties > Desktop after the client disconnects, the selected background still has the "Centre" setting, which matches your finding of logging off/on again to fix restoring the background non-stretched and ...

Wallpaper is stretched after disconnecting
We have a corporate wallpaper that is centred on the screen. After disconnecting from the server, the wallpaper is no longer centred, but stretched instead. This makes it look terrible! Any fix?
I think that has been a bug in previous versions but it is still not fixed... ;( Can't you just set it ...
