I had an older router that used telnet to access it. Open up a command prompt and type in telnet (router ip) and that should work. There's more info here.

Usually you need to resolve you dns issues. Can you access the computer in windows explorer (e.g. to transfer files) using it's name? If not, this is probably not vnc issue. Also, if the ip address is changing, can you clarify it you are conecting inside the network, or through the internet?

Don't normally want to divert topics, but it seems to be answered, however I was curious. I have a static IP from our ISP, that's standard for them. It makes me wonder how often you can get that. How many ISPs use static ips for people?

Unless you have someone on the remote machine either add you as a client or use the nat2nat connector you have to open ports. Or you can simply use the repeater and that would let you connect to any computer on your network with only one port open. Just install the service and direct port 5901 to ...

Okay, correct be if I'm wrong, but are you simply on a LAN? If so you don't need to direct ports, that's only for traffic on the Internet coming in. You can change the port by going to the Admin Properties screen, but usually all being set to 5900 on a network if fine. As for upgrading, I never used ...

For a start you could use RC19.5 on both machines. Things were changed making old versions not always work on a file transfer.

Check your admin settings, Enable File Transfer should be checked.

Also you could look here if you still are being denied access:

Well, I guess make sure the server is running. Also make sure the sp2 firewall isn't blocking the necessary port (usually 5900). Then on the other computer make a connection to your ip on the local network.

It's pretty easy after you get it setup right. This is what you're talking about right?

Well, if the connection from office to home works, it seems that the necessary ports are fine, so your home router should no be an issue for outgoing connections. Do you have the right ip for your office? Also, if you just use an ip address for connecting to your office, your DNS settings should not ...

VNC isn't a very processor intensive program. What good would that do?

Also, 64bit systems stil support the 32bit programs.

I could see this being implemented, however the time I need it the most is if I want to switch viewers that are maxamized. Because making it full screen hides the taskbar. And maybe a shortcut to start a new instance of the viewer within the viewer?

They're based on the same thing WinVNC, however Ultra has many more features like file transfer, 128bit encryption support and a video hook driver that updates the screen better. The Ultra viewer can connect to a client running RealVNC, but using the RealVNC viewer to a Ultra server may not work if ...

You can also just go to a command line and provided you have administrator priviledges on that computer type somthing in like: shutdown -r -t 05 -m\\computername This would restart the computer "computername" in 5 seconds. This requires no additional software. Type "shutdown /?" for more options. :D

Let's say the computer's IP is 10.10.10.10, then you would just enter 10.10.10.10:5500 into the host name category. This also works with the computer name:

computername:5500

Notice how this service pack was aimed more for home user security? Really, if you just use sp1 and have virus/firewall software on your computer, it's not much different. However I think installing it was worth it for me.

I left the firewall on after installing. It's fairly transparent. :) To allow VNC I just open port 5900. Works for me.

Since Remote Desktop isn't blocked after the install, you might want to use that to open the port, but if you have a lot of computers that might not work.
