Why is UltraVNC only on Windows?

Post by Rowland »

It occurs to me I'm asking an awful lot of 'why' questions lately. I can't help it. I look through the FAQs and I don't see many explanations why things are the way they are. And most of the questions I have begin with 'why'.

Anyway, I'd really like to offer remote adminsitration to Windows users who are behind NAT but without making things complicated for them. I want to run Linux because my vncviewer would have to be in a DMZ. No way I'm putting Windows in a DMZ. That's just crazy.

But everywhere I turn there's some compatibility issue or other. It's crazy. What's the issue here?

Yeah I looked at that NAT-to-NAT connector and my eyes glazed over. I don't trust complexity. And where's the source code to it?

What would it take get all the UltraVNC features buildable cross--platform? Could we just have one version of the VNC suite? If you need a volunteer to code it, I'd give it a shot. But first give me an idea what I'm getting into. What's the history behind this current situation?
