Basic Overview of plugins and helpers use

Hello,

I am just wondering if you can give some examples of what uses there might be for plugins and helpers. I have always just used the program as it is, without any further modifications. I am just wondering if there is something great and useful I am missing out on, or if these are more specialized programs for very specific situations. I am only posting this because I am probably not alone in these thoughts. Thank you.
