blank screen revisited

Post by Andrew »

Just a suggestion on screen blanking, I'm not sure if ultravnc still uses windows power management/monitor sleep mode to achieve blanking, so if it still does I wanted to propose a possible solution. Please let me know wherher this is plausible or not.

Here's my idea, configure the vnc server to not transfer a certain color to the vnc viewer, are very rare or arbirtary color that is hardly used. This color could be used to blank the entire vnc server computer screen, but since this color would not be sent to the viewer the server screen itself would be blank but not the viewer. I hope this makes sense.

Also, can you please add a way to blank the screen from the command-line or from an options.vnc file. I work at a school and it would be nice to blank lab computers while the instructor is lecturing.

Thank you,

Is this feature available now? I would want it also. I suppose it isn't that difficult or am I mistaken. It also only has an impact on the viewer.

If you're interested and you can provide me a command-line application to blank the screen I can add support for it in my vnc central program (http://scripters.altervista.org/Project ... /index.php). It's a separated program that just sits in the tray and can launch applications that have been remotely requested from another pc. the bad thing is that you can only select a single computer at once in the main program dialog, however if you are interested I can add multi-select support so you can blank all the screens together.

Update:

now the application supports multiple selections: just select multiple computers from the list and you can execute an action on all of them at once. If you can manage to find a command-line application that blanks the screen you can use vnc central to blank all the screens altogether.
Also the program main window/settings window can now be locked to prevent ppl to mess up with the application while it's running.

hellooooooo? You can use my application (VNC Central) to have all the computers you want run the same application at the same time and guess what? I've found out an application that blanks the screen (it powers off the screen however it requires apm + win2k or xp). Check out my application download page you find a link for both my application and the one that you can associate with my application to blank the screens (and btw my applications just eats 500kb of memory when minimized in tray so it shouldn't be an issue to install it on a large number of pcs).
