Disable server on one of two networks?

Post by idontlikeregistering »

I've got two computers, one standing in a closet with no keyboard or monitor, used mainly to store data and play music/movies, and one laptop, that I use in my daily work.

There is a shared WLAN in the house, which both computers can access (the closet comp needs it to update various software). I also have a plain old network cable plugged into the closet comp, to which I connect the laptop to get a reliable and speedy connection for VNC.

I'm currently able to connect from my laptop to the closet computer with no problems. BUT the closet computer is making itself availible for connection on both the WLAN and the plain old cable, and that seems uhm... sub-optimal from a security point of view. I'd like to stop the closet comp's VNC server from listening on the WLAN, so that you need physical access to the plain old cable to connect.

Is it possible? How?

An alternative is to configure the closet comp's VNC server only accepting login from the laptop (and only the IP of the plain old cable).

You may try to use the "AuthHosts" setting. See this thread for reference.
