Seperate the Input/Video Lockout Keys on Toolbar

Post by RandyQ »

Would really love to be able to just lock the keyboard and mouse only, and NOT also blank the screen. sometimes you have a user that just goes nuts with the mouse, and you want to lock their KB and Mouse, but leave the screen turned on (not blanked), so that you can continue showing them what to do.

Also, when remote administering computers in a lab environment, sometimes a student will start messing with the input, but with the current feature set, if you lock the remote user's input, it also blanks the screen, which 99% of the time causes the user to power off the computer, usually because they think it shut down on them. If the inputs ONLY were turned off, then they could see that I was working, and it would lessen the likelyhood of them powering off.

It was this way when we were using Novel's workstation management years and years ago, and it really did help to be able to just lock the inputs, but NOT blank the screen.

Please separate these features into two toolbar buttons: [Blank Screen] and [Disable Inputs].

Clarification, disabling inputs means disabling input on the REMOTE HOST, or server machine. The viewer should still be able to control the inputs and keep working. Return input/monitor control back to remote host upon disconnect.

Can't separate them without breaking RFB protocol but if you want it, here is a mod that lets you disable inputs without blanking the monitor.

Image

If disable inputs only is not checked the monitor and inputs are disabled as normal but if you set it to disable inputs only, the monitor is not blanked.

WinVNC.exe version 1.0.6.6 plus SVN revision 455 plus Advantig modification to disable inputs without blanking monitor:

http://www.advantig.com/files/ultravnc_ ... ly_mod.zip

Edits:

The zip contains a signed 32bit exe only no 64bit version.

ultravnc.ini setting is:

BlankInputsOnly=0
or
BlankInputsOnly=1

Why break RFB protocol ????

vncviewer system menu
disable remote input/monitor
enable remote input/monitor

replace by
toggle remote blank Monitor
toggle remote inputs

winvnc
(keyboard and mouse)
disable local inputs + on viewer request)

Misc
Enable Blank Monitor on Viewer Request (don't need change )

There is only one protocol command to blank the screen and disable inputs. It doesn't send separate commands for each function. It would have to be added which may break compatibility. It could easily be added but extending the protocol is not my decision to make. The decision would have to come from the project owners.
