I have this problem too.

I have resolved the startup issue with zonealarm detailed in the link you posted, however what this person is talking about is different.

You cannot physically control zone alarm through VNC.

You can open the control manager, but cant click any options.
If you use anything that requests permission for inbound/outbound access from zonealarm, you cannot click on accept/deny in the zonealarm popup.

ZoneAlarm somehow knows that the commands are not coming from a local connection it seems.

Post by plasmicsound »

I have solved my own problem - but i thought i would post it so anyone else can see how!!!

open zone alarms locally,

under the overveiw tab select preferences

un-check Protect the Zone-Alarm Client,

thus allowing control through VNC

Two notes: 1st, I had this working before on the system it doesnt work on now. 2nd, it works on another PC that I connect to that, as far as I knew, was setup the same. Now I have seen this "Protect ZA Client" area before in their menu system but for the life of me, it is not where you are specifying now as I look. I have checked my PC and the one I am trying to connect and alter remotely. I can not find it. I have the latest versions, did they maybe move it? I keep looking and no luck. Your answer makes sense, ZA has so many options that I do find it hard to hone in on the ones I need when I need it/them. I will keep looking. thanks,
Dave

Hi -
The free version of Zonealarm (V7.0.337.000) still has the "Protect ZoneAlarm Client" checkbox under the preferences tab - I tried it and now I can control zonealarm from UVNC. My paid version of ZoneAlarm (Antivirus/Firewall) does not have this option available.

However, looking at the ZoneAlarm forum - there is a solution by editing the XML of the ZoneAlarm settings file (eg: using Notepad as a text editor) as follows:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://forums.zonealarm.com/zonelabs/bo ... e.id=42535

I was reading this pdf about Zone Labs Integrity Client:

http://zone.uchicago.edu/resources/4_Cl ... tection%22

and wondered if these xml modifications can be used to disable the "Protect the Zonealarm Client" behavior in versions where this option has been removed.

I think it can be done like this:

1. On the preferences tab, backup your settings. Make a copy of this xml file to a safe location.

2. Open the xml file with a text editor. Search for the word disableKeyboardMouseProtection and change the value from false to true.

3. Save the changed xml file.

4. Go back to the preferences tab, press the restore button, browse to the modded xml file and import the new settings.

5. Shut down ZA and restart it. (or just reboot).

Using this method I was able to disable this "feature" and again use my middle mouse button to show/hide desktop (as programmed by Intellipoint) when ZA was open.
If you are using a version of ZA without this option and need this setting disabled in order to interract with ZA using the keyboard or mouse you could try this.

Hi,

The links to the xml solutions in your message seem to be broken. Not only that but, with my version of ZA (downloaded last week) I can't track down the settings xml file. I suspect that Zone Labs have taken extra precautions to protect the file.

I am using version 6.5.737.000 of ZoneAlarm and to solve my issue I gave UltraVNC super rights under program control [programs tab]. As soon as I did that, I was able to control ZoneAlarm through remote.

I copied the post in quotes below:
Why does VNC suddenly stop responding due to ZoneAlarm? ZoneAlarm is a type of firewall called a "personal firewall". That is, it's a piece of software which runs on the PC that it's protecting.

ZoneAlarm has a feature which intercepts all VNC keyboard and mouse inputs whenever a ZA window is active. This can be caused by an alert box popping up on the VNC Server, or by a user on the VNC Server activating the ZA control panel. Once this happens, VNC behaves as if it is in 'view only' mode -- the user on the VNC Viewer can see the windows on the VNC Server, but can no longer control them.

If and when someone closes the ZA windows on the VNC Server machine, control will be returned to the VNC Viewer. Until then, no amount of reconnects will regain remote control of the server.
------------------
OLD Method: version 5 (2001 to 2004)
------------------
This 'feature' of ZoneAlamr can be turned off in ZoneAlarm as follows:

- Open ZA control window
- Click the 'Firewall' tab
- Click the 'Advanced' button near the bottom of the tab window
- In the 'Advanced Settings' window, turn on the option titled 'Disable
Keyboard and Mouse Protection'.
- Click 'OK'.
