Failed to connect to server

Post by Oliver »

mentions: Replace firefox by UltraVNC server and (fx) by (winvnc) in this checklist. Good point!

For Windows XP/2003 or better:
Goto Control Panel, Windows Firewall and turn it off.
Try again to connect.
If it works, turn the firewall back on, goto the Exceptions tag and "Add Program" (UltraVNC).
This needs to be done on both machines.
If this still doesn't work go back to the Windows Firewall and "Add Port" 5900.

For Windows 2000 or before:
Consult the manual for your firewall and make sure that the port 5900 is unblocked.

If neither of these works, ask here in the forum.

Another solution is to make sure that your cable or dsl modems do not have a firewall active in them. Speedstreams has a few models like 5200, 5400 that some ISP have on by default. I came across that the other day and wanted to add this to the FAQ..:)

A contribution from one of our users :
ljwheeler wrote:The recommendations mentioned in this particular thread failed to resolve this issue for me but led me to make the following registry changes which did in fact resolve the problem. I am running the latest version of UltraVNC and the latest version of ZoneAlarm Security Suite.

All of the following changes were made under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services.

Initial settings were as follows:
\vnccom\Start = 2
\vncdrv\DependOnService = NULL (This key did not exist)
\vncdrv\Start = 3
\vsmon\Start = 3
\winvnc\DependOnService = NULL (This key did not exist)
\winvnc\Start = 2

Modified settings are as follows:
\vnccom\Start = 3
\vncdrv\DependOnService = vsmon
\winvnc\DependOnService = vsmon
\winvnc\Start = 3

If you could post this information, it might be of benefit to others who are currently encountering this same issue with UltraVNC
From reading it I assume that on some setups the system does not wait for one service/driver to be started before another one depending on it.

I am not sure about the start settings, though because especially for the drivers it is not always harmless to change them, but I'll ask one of the main developers to look into it.

if vncviewer from LAN can't reach vncserver on WLAN laptop/desktop computer,
open bridge between LAN (wired) and WLAN (wireles),
check your manual of your broadband router or your internet gateway device.

the bridge is blocked and can be unblocked,
enable bridge
(disabled by default for security purpose)

bridge closed
LAN --> WLAN fail
WLAN --> LAN success

bridge open
LAN <--> WLAN success
WLAN <--> LAN success

Question: Unable to contact computer/server by hostname ?
computer receive dynamic ip from DHCP server.

Solution:
Control Panel ... Security Center...
Windows Firewall -- tab Exceptions --
[v] Files and Printer Sharing (enable)
