Regarding the Firewall I dont know how to make SC a "Trusted" application where the firewall would automatically allow it. Windows XP firewall should allow it since the user it is user initiated, yet commercial products may not allow it.

I would suggest utilizing an already open port, yet I still think even if the firewall has a rule that allows that port it is always application specific.

I am unaware of how you can by default allow a firewall program to allow it to go out as a "Trusted" application.

Try using it with someone else that is with w2k, XP or a different operating system just to see if you can or can not see someone elses system. If you cant then there could be a potential problem on your side. If you can then maybe there is some issue with win 98?

One security hole I see that can be a problem as this becomes more mainstream is the lack of authentication for connecting to a remote PC.

if the client has a firewall running they have to allow the application out to the internet no matter what you use. Even the web based programs must be allowed to go to the web (Which most people allow) otherwise it will be blocked.

Its been a while since Ive been around, I tried searching this out but couldnt find it.

How do you make the SC grab the IP of the machine it's being run on?

Run Noip.coms software or dynamic DNS application over the internet. Then it will automatically forward it to whatever IP you have by them changing their record.

or get a static IP address.. but sometimes your cost is 10 bucks ...
